Elektra (1909) is a one-act opera -defined as a «Tragödie»- by Richard Strauss, with a libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal based on Sophocles´ eponymous tragedy. Strauss saw Hofmannsthal´s version of the Greek tragedy in Berlin in 1903 and decided to turn it into an opera. This marked the beginning of his close partnership with the Austrian writer, which was to last twenty years and produce some splendid results.

Gran Teatre del Liceu

The Gran Teatre del Liceu opened in 1847. On January 31, 1994, the building was destroyed by fire. Now rebuilt, the Liceu is used for classic plays and other kinds of performances.

Bus: the buses nr. 14 & 59 go down Las Ramblas and stop just in front of the Theatre.
