Elche Club de Fútbol, also known as Elche CF or “franjiverdes” (green-striped), as they are known by their fans, is the team of the city of Elche in the Valencian Community. It was founded in the year 1923 due to the popular demand from the city of a team that represented them. They are rivals with Hércules Club de Fútbol, as both of them are the outstanding teams in the province of Alicante. The stadium where they hold matches is called Martínez Valero, previously known as Nuevo Estadio (New Stadium), and there the FIFA World Cup in the year 1982 was hosted. When the team played in second division, they won the league twice and have been Spanish Cup semifinalists three times.
